The purpose of sustainable design is the elimination of negative effects on the environment through sensitive and skillful design. Sustainable design has minimal impact on the environment, does not require non-renewable resources and people interact with nature. Sustainable design requires foresight in selecting the site, housing plans, material selection and project implementation. Some of the considerations that should be considered include the choice of non-toxic materials that are sustainably produced or recycled, and requires minimal processing power, using materials that are more durable and longer life, to reduce the impact replacement production, design for reuse and recycling, and design of biological systems in the lines, to enable reuse of materials in continuous closed cycles. The basic idea is to create healthy homes that are not harmful to the occupants or the larger environment.

Sustainable design seeks efficiency in heating and cooling, such as home heat pumps, using alternative energy sources such as appropriate home location and solar technology to heat water and generate electricity, recycling of materials construction and use of local materials where possible, collection of rainwater for washing and gardening, and waste management in place.
